Scripture for the Day

In Mathew 22, Jesus answers the Pharisee's question by saying the greatest commandment is "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 8 This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."

Although raised in the church, my earliest memory of the second commandment is as expressed in the Boy Scout Oath which my boy scout troop recited at the beginning of our meetings each Monday evening in the Church's social hall.

On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

In the somewhat serious and silly way of young adolescent boys in the 1950's, we summarized our obligation to help other people as "helping old ladies cross the street"; and while I don't recall actually helping more than a few ladies cross the street, the expression has stayed with me and now some 60 years later still comes to mind as a reminder of the second commandment and a stimulus to reach out to others who I can try to help.
